Appointment of Master of Lee Woo Sing College - Prof YAM Yeung

On June 14, 2024, the University Council approved the appointment of Professor Yeung YAM as the Second Master of Lee Woo Sing College, succeeding the late Professor Joseph LAU. Professor YAM will assume his new role on July 1, 2024.

Professor YAM currently serves as the Director of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute and is a Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at CUHK. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). His research interests span AI, surgical robotics, computational control, and smart manufacturing. He is actively involved in two CUHK InnoCenters at HKSTP, serving as Principal Investigator for the Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) and the Multi-Scale Medical Robotic Center (MRC). Since 2019, Professor YAM has led the CUHK Jockey Club AI-for-the-Future Project,Additionally, he heads two HKSAR Education Bureau projects focused on mainstreaming AI education and teacher training for secondary schools. Professor YAM has held several leadership positions at CUHK, including Chairman of the Department from 2004 to 2011 and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2018.

Professor YAM has been affiliated with Lee Woo Sing College since 2011, assuming the role of Associate Master in June of that year. He is a Senior College Fellow, heading and serving on the Hostel and College Facilities Management Committee and the Scholarships and Bursaries Committee. Since February 2024, he has been the Acting College Master. Over a decade, Professor YAM has collaborated closely with the late Professor Joseph LAU to establish a robust foundation for the College and strategize for its future. He is a respected and modest leader, well-versed in the College’s mission, history, culture, and direction. His extensive experience in managing the College has garnered the trust of the Committee of Overseers, staff, and students.

In accordance with the University appointment procedures, a nomination committee was formed to select the new College Master. Public consultations, nominations, and a meet-up session were conducted between March and May 2024. After thorough evaluation of all nominations, the Committee recommended Professor YAM for the position.
