It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Professor Joseph Wan Yee Lau, a devoted husband, father, esteemed educator, and internationally respected figure in the field of surgery. Professor Lau passed away on 7th February 2024 at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family.

Professor Lau left behind a legacy of unparalleled dedication and service to the medical community and beyond. He held several esteemed positions, including the Chairman of the Medical Council of Hong Kong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Founding Master of Lee Woo Sing College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, among many.

Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Lau held key positions in various professional organizations, leaving an indelible mark on the global medical landscape. He received recognition as an Honorary Fellows of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and served as the President at both the International and Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. His significant contributions were further acknowledged with the awarding of the Wu Jie-Ping Medical Prize and the prestigious Silver Bauhinia Star from the Hong Kong SAR government. 

Professor Lau’s unwavering dedication to the advancement of surgical knowledge and his profound impact on the lives of countless individuals will forever be cherished and revered. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of medical professionals. 

Professor Lau’s impact on the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him extended far beyond his contributions to the medical community. As the Founding Master of Lee Woo Sing College, he understood the importance of education in shaping the future of students. He took the lead in many innovative projects on hostel facilities, and formulated the framework of College General Education, scholarships allocation and awarding schemes. His inspiring leadership encourages students to actively participate in College matters. His approachable personality and genuine concern for each student’s growth and well-being create a nurturing atmosphere where everyone feels valued and supported. Professor Lau will be fondly remembered for his warmth, compassion, and unwavering support for his family, friends, colleagues and students.

The family of Professor Lau and Lee Woo Sing College would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many friends, colleagues, and well-wishers who have reached out with messages of love and support during this difficult time. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Professor Lau’s life and legacy. A College memorial website will also be set up. Details will be announced at a later date.

As he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered, Professor Lau’s family and loved ones find solace in the knowledge that his kindness and spirit will forever remain a beacon of inspiration in the hearts and minds of all who were touched by his remarkable life.
