#18 Going “Home” in the Lunar New Year

回『家』過年

 

各位和聲人,

豬年開始,祝大家龍馬精神,萬事如意!秉承傳統,農曆新年我都會回『家』過年,這個『家』不是指我的蝸居,而是我成長的老家。因為家族成員多,每逢新年我都會回到這個老家與親友團拜。回家過年的感覺特別窩心,平時冷清清的老家,一下子就熱鬧起來了。在大年初一,老家門外的小市集總是人潮湧湧,有賣傳統小吃的,也有賣賀年雜貨的,今年墟市的老闆們更加入了一些新元素,這邊一檔韓式炸雞,那邊一檔泰式蝦多士,實在佩服老闆們的生意頭腦。但我還是比較喜歡地道小食,買些「煎釀三寶」來重拾回憶。檔主是我小學同學的父母,兒時的我常在夜宵時候光顧他們,雖然他們已喚不起我的名字,但大家還是有種莫名奇妙的親切感。小食價格由當年的兩蚊三件漲價到現在的廿蚊八件,幸好風味依舊十足,一些兒時記趣隨之閃過腦袋。我們靠著熟悉的面孔和味覺來喚起情感記憶,又靠著獨有的回憶與這個地方連繫出「家」的感覺。同學們,山城中又有沒有一些景象和事物能喚起你的情感回憶呢?

Going “Home” in the Lunar New Year

It’s the start of a new year. Wishing everyone a prosperous Year of the Pig with full of joy and fulfillment!

I have a big family and it’s my family tradition to get together at “home” during the Lunar New Year. The “home” here does not refer to the tiny flat that I am living in, but a place I grew up. It is always warm and comforting to have a jolly time with family members, especially the new ones, at home. There is a kart bazaar at my home during the Lunar New Year. It is always packed with peoples where one can find lots of traditional foods and groceries. Surprisingly, there are also Korean and Thai snacks this year and I can tell from the owner’s faces that the businesses are doing well. But for me, I’d prefer the local delicacy -  “three stuffed treasures” (that include stuffed pepper, stuffed eggplant and stuffed bean curd). The owners of this kart are the parents of my primary schoolmate. They probably have forgotten my name but we have a sense of intimacy every time we see each other. The price tag of the “treasures” has gone up four times. Fortunately, the taste remains the same, which brings a flash of memory to me. It is these recognizable places, intimate faces and memorable tastes that give us a unique sense of belonging, that connect us to our “home”.
